efore you file this under “wars cost money, news at 11”: the hypocrisy isn’t that conflicts move energy markets. They do. The hypocrisy is the product still being sold at the pump.

Brand: prices are coming down. Method: keep a Middle East war that CBO says drove more than 40% of personal-consumption inflation last quarter. Personal practice: post that everything is getting cheaper — with a cute asterisk for oil — while gas sits at $4.32 and diesel hits a record.

When affordability is the campaign and “temporary exception” is the governing memo, it isn’t economics. It’s a loyalty test with a receipt.

Exhibit A: The Numbers Landed TuesdayThe Congressional Budget Office, in a letter released Tuesday, estimated the Iran war had cost the Pentagon about $38 billion through August 1 — mostly munitions replacement, equipment, fuel, and related ops. Monthly burn: roughly $2–3 billion if the fighting stays near recent intensity. That estimate still skips repair bills for damaged U.S. facilities overseas, because the Defense Department did not fully cooperate with the request for data.

Energy is the kitchen-table chapter. CBO attributed more than 40% of second-quarter 2026 personal-consumption inflation to higher energy prices from Strait of Hormuz and Red Sea disruptions. It projects the war will add about 0.5 percentage points to inflation in the first quarter of 2027 versus a no-war baseline. NBC’s reporting on the same release: national regular gas around $4.32 as of Tuesday — up about 45% since the war began — and diesel at a record $6.26, up about 66%. Mortgage rates that were under 6% before the conflict were cited near 7.22%.

Munitions chapter, same letter: replacing expended stocks alone runs an estimated $21.7 billion ($13.1B interceptors, $7.3B land-attack cruise, $1.2B other), and rebuilding antimissile inventory could take on the order of five years. A Pentagon IG report the day before told a parallel story on shortfalls and bottlenecks. The White House line, via spokeswoman Anna Kelly: decisive action, plenty of stockpiles, courage previous presidents lacked.

Exhibit B: “Temporary Exception of Oil”

Monday, per Al Jazeera’s write-up of the CBO coverage, Trump posted the governing theology: with the temporary exception of oil, prices are coming down sharply — and oil will drop like a rock as soon as the military conflict with Iran is over, and that will not be long.

Parse it. Affordability is happening except for the commodity that prices groceries on trucks, school buses, farm equipment, and the weekly fill-up. Victory is forever one victory away. The bill at the pump is patriotic patience.

Earlier in the war he framed higher fuel as a “very small price to pay” for safety and peace “ONLY FOOLS WOULD THINK DIFFERENTLY!” Reason and others tracked that e as Brent blew past $100 and household fuel overages stacked into the hundreds of dollars. Moody’s Analytics’ Mark Zandi told Fox Business the war had added on the order of $115 billion in extra gasoline, diesel, and jet-fuel costs roughly $860 per household on his math — with lower- and middle-income households feeling it hardest once the tax-cut sugar high faded.

So the sequence is: promise cheaper life → light a war that CBO says is a major inflation driver call the fuel spike temporary / small / foolish to notice → announce prices are falling except oil → promise oil will plummet after “WIN.”

That is not a cost-of-living agenda. That is a deferred receipt.

Exhibit C: The Market Still Has a War Premium

Oil is not a vibe. As of mid-September, Brent has been hovering near the high-$100s after strikes on Saudi energy infrastructure, suspended Yanbu loadings, and an offline East-West pipeline — disruptions Reuters and others tied to the wider Iran-war theater and Houthi attacks. Hormuz and Red Sea risk premiums are the mechanism CBO named. House war-powers votes and “easing tensions” chatter can shave a few dollars off the screen; they do not erase the supply math while pipelines stay dark and diesel futures print multi-year highs.

Trump’s “drop like a rock” forecast is a prediction markets can falsify every morning. CBO’s inflation attribution is a rear-view mirror with receipts. One of those two is doing analysis. The other is doing sales.

Now Aim at Everyone

If a Democratic White House ran on grocery prices, opened a multi-theater energy war, then told voters everything was getting cheaper except the fuel that prices the grocery run, this site would say the same thing. Process that only applies to the other tribe is not process.

Democrats have their own affordability theater selective amnesia about spending, regulatory costs, and donor-class comfort with “temporary” pain when the war is theirs. Pretending only one coalition treats household budgets as a campaign prop until governing makes them inconvenient is how audiences miss their own perfume.

Also true: Iran policy is a real strategic fight, munitions stockpiles matter, and energy markets are global. The adult critique is whether the stated cost-of-living promise survives contact with the war you chose. The immature critique is calling the pump a temporary asterisk forever.

The Questions Worth Asking

If prices are coming down sharply, why does the temporary exception cover the commodity CBO says drove more than 40% of last quarter’s consumption inflation?

If oil will drop like a rock when the war ends, and “that will not be long,” what calendar should households use and who eats the $4.32 / $6.26 meantime?

If $38 billion through August 1 is courage, why did DoD stiff-arm the budget office on facility-damage numbers that would make the total larger?

And if lower-income households are the ones Zandi says can’t digest $4 gas, what exactly is “small price to pay” measuring — national security, or who feels it?

The Final Word

Cost-of-living politics deserves boring honesty: wars move oil; oil moves inflation; inflation moves mortgages and groceries. What we got was a nonpartisan scorecard for tens of billions and a presidential post that carved oil out of the victory lap.

Own the trade-off in daylight — this war is worth $4 gas and a half-point of inflation — or drop the affordability costume. The pretending is the corrosive part. And this week, the costume came with a temporary exception stamped on the pump.
