WE DIDN'T LIKE THE READING

2026-10-14

Quick question for you. What do you call a resignation that arrives after the receipts? A press conference with a suitcase.

The reading that ended the posting

On Tuesday, Oct. 13, White House press secretary Katie Zacharia told reporters the administration had asked Kimberly Guilfoyle to resign as U.S. ambassador to Greece, per CNN. Later Tuesday, a White House official told CNN the formal resignation was in.

Donald Trump‘s explanation was almost poetry for a midterm week: “I didn’t like what I read.” He had not spoken with her, he said. And the family tie? Softened on cue: she “wasn’t a member of my family” and only “dated my son a long time ago,” not a member of the family.

Guilfoyle posted on X that the allegations are “false” and that she intends to “vigorously defend my name, my reputation, and my integrity.” Her lawyers told CNN the Amex ask was about closing out outstanding receivables for speeches and consulting: “Asking a client to pay for work already done is not corruption.” They also called reports about her travel misleading and said she complied with federal gift rules.

The sequel, not the re-litigation

We already walked the Signal and text trail in Honey please (site card): the “honey please” ask, the $100,000 American Express ask to donor Eric Deters, and the access pitch before her confirmation. Tonight is the resignation act, not another verse-by-verse of the chat log.

The Journal also reported lavish gifts, a lobbyist for a Greek construction company brought into official meetings, and promotion of a Greek energy firm. Guilfoyle denies wrongdoing. A source told CNN the State Department inspector general is investigating; the OIG spokesperson gave the standard no-comment.

Monday Trump was weighing an ouster: “We’re not happy.” Tuesday he asked for the resignation. Secretary Marco Rubio had publicly defended her in Athens, then privately wanted her gone, per CNN sourcing. One source: she was “basically fired on live TV.”

The red costume: swamp with a passport stamp

If your pitch is draining the swamp, a $100,000 Amex ask to a donor days before confirmation is not a branding win. Even if her lawyers win every authenticity fight, the optics are the same machine we already named in Honey please: raise money, sell proximity, cash the post.

Trump orbit loves “no one is above the law” until the reading gets awkward. Then it’s a personnel matter, a dated relationship, and a social-media farewell. Access-for-cash is not a Greece-only specialty. It’s the product.

The blue costume: accountability that discovered the pocketbook this week

House Foreign Affairs Committee Democrats, after the ask-to-resign news, wrote that “resigning does not shield her from accountability” and that she “used her position as a Trump official to get rich, while American families struggle with the cost of living,” per CNN.

Fair to want oversight. Less fair to pretend this is newly discovered virtue. Politico reported Oct. 12 that Democrats are turning corruption into a pocketbook message for the midterms. Useful midterm weather. Also selective: the raise-money-get-the-post machine has worn both jerseys for decades. We already said so in Honey please with the Hunter access parallel.

If your cost-of-living outrage peaks the day a MAGA ambassador falls, it isn’t a doctrine. It’s a calendar.

Both costumes

Here’s the adult version.

Trump asked for a resignation because the reporting was radioactive weeks before Nov. 3. Guilfoyle denies and will fight. Democrats want hearings and a pocketbook chyron. None of that invents charges that don’t exist, and none of it erases that both parties run the access machine when the donor is theirs.

Own the boring standard: no wire-to-hide-it asks, no luxury-for-access blur, and no midterm purity that starts when the other side’s passport gets stamped “resigned.”

Ask your reps one question: will they back the same inspector-general sunlight for every administration’s donor class, or only when the Amex PDF has the other logo?
