NEWS FOR ME

2026-10-12

Quick question for you. What do you call a ceasefire when one of the two parties finds out about it from a Truth Social post? Sunday morning diplomacy, one-phone edition.

Effective immediately, according to one account

“Effective immediately, there is an ENERGY CEASEFIRE in the War between Russia and Ukraine,” Donald Trump posted on Truth Social Sunday morning, per NBC News and Axios. “Both parties have agreed. Do not break it!” He did not say what the ceasefire covered, and there was no immediate confirmation from Moscow, NBC reported.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy told Axios the announcement “was news for me. But if Russians agree to an energy ceasefire, Ukraine will agree.” Then the polite knife: “If President Trump negotiated it with Putin, please tell us when the ceasefire begins. We are ready, and we will accept it.”

NBC and Axios both note Trump made a similar announcement a month ago, and both sides kept attacking each other’s energy facilities. The Kyiv Independent reported that Russia struck Kharkiv’s power plant after Sunday’s post, and that a senior Ukrainian official close to Zelenskyy said crews were still restoring power and water in Kyiv when the announcement landed. “Nobody has heard [of the ceasefire],” the official said.

NEWS FOR ME is the whole peace process: one confirmed author, and two countries still trading strikes on the grid.

The stick that arrived before the ceasefire

Before the post, the Financial Times reported, citing unnamed European officials, that U.S. officials told Kyiv and European capitals in calls on Oct. 10 and 11 that Washington could suspend the Prioritised Ukraine Requirements List, or PURL, the mechanism used to buy U.S. weapons for Ukraine, unless Kyiv stops striking Russian energy infrastructure. Washington also threatened to stop sharing intelligence, according to the FT report as relayed by the Kyiv Independent. The White House declined to confirm or comment on the calls.

So the sequence, for anyone keeping score without a translator: the diesel deal on Friday. On Saturday, per NBC, Trump said: “I suggest they get a new leader who can make a deal, because he could have made many deals.” The weapons threat over the weekend. Then, on Sunday, a ceasefire announcement Kyiv says it knew nothing about.

We covered the diesel paperwork in BREAKING NEWS: SANCTIONS BY THE TON. Treasury’s General License 135 opened the market to Russian diesel through April 7, 2027. Trump said Russia would “immediately” release 300,000 tons, then 500,000 in November and another million after that, per NBC. NBC also reports Trump has sought to blame the Ukraine war, rather than the Iran war the U.S. launched in February, for record diesel prices. On ABC’s “This Week,” Zelenskyy put it bluntly: it’s easy to blame Ukraine for higher fuel prices “when everybody in the world understands [that] because of the war in [the] Middle East, the prices are rising.”

Zelenskyy’s actual offer

On ABC, Zelenskyy said, “We are ready for energy ceasefire,” and that if Russia wants one, “we are open for this.” The line that will travel: “Don’t attack us. Don’t kill our children. We will stop attack your diesel.” He also said Ukraine would hold elections if Russia agreed to a 60-day ceasefire, and that “it’s up to Ukrainians” to choose their leader, noting that Putin would also like to change who leads Ukraine.

Ready for a mutual halt. Not ready to learn about one from a presidential social media account.

The red costume: invent the ceasefire, keep the leverage

Republicans, if your peace plan requires Ukraine to discover it in an Axios interview, it isn’t a plan. It’s a press release with a threat attached.

You licensed Putin’s diesel, blamed Kyiv for the pump, told Ukraine to get a new leader, then posted a ceasefire neither Moscow nor Kyiv had confirmed. The FT report on PURL and intelligence is the tell: the “effective immediately” truce came after the weapons pipeline got squeezed. We tracked the ask-then-license pattern in Don’t Hit Diesel and Temporary Exception: Oil.

You don’t get to license Putin’s diesel, threaten Ukraine’s weapons pipeline, and then announce a ceasefire that makes the timeline look tidy.

The blue costume: “as long as it takes,” no end-state

Democrats, before you frame this as pure betrayal theater.

In December 2022, with Zelenskyy beside him at the White House, Joe Biden promised, “We will stay with you for as long as it takes,” per the American Presidency Project. His endgame at that press conference: “we’re going to continue to help Ukraine succeed on the battlefield,” and talks would follow. That’s a hope, not an end-state. It never said what “it” was: victory, frozen lines, a NATO guarantee, or a deal Ukraine could survive.

Performative solidarity polls well. Endgames do not. Now that domestic politics is driving the map, with the midterms, Iran war sticker shock and diesel at record highs, the coalition that treated any talk of a pause as surrender has to explain what the plan was.

If your Ukraine policy can’t say what winning looks like without a donor call and a chyron, it wasn’t a policy. It was a jersey.

Own the boring standard: if you want a ceasefire, negotiate it with both parties in the room. And if you spent years saying “as long as it takes,” say what “it” meant before the pump wrote the script.

Both costumes

Ukraine says it’s ready for a mutual energy halt. Russia struck Kharkiv’s power plant after Sunday’s post, per the Kyiv Independent. Washington threatened the weapons pipeline, then announced the peace. The blue side spent years selling open-ended solidarity without a finish line. The red side is selling finish lines Ukraine didn’t sign.

Mute the Truth Social post for ten seconds and ask who agreed to what, when, and with whom. If the answer is still “news for me,” it wasn’t a ceasefire. It was a headline looking for co-authors.
